Next to flooring and countertops, there is probably no bigger (or expensive) design decision that you will make for your home than kitchen cabinets! There are so many things to consider, it would be impossible to cover all of the elements in one blog….so watch for details in upcoming posts….and let’s start with the basics:

Style: Your door will make the biggest statement so look at your options carefully. Feel the room. Is it tradtional, modern, country? Match the doors to your original style selection and be true to your vision.

Functionality: If you have lots of stuff, are a serious cook or big-time fashionistas, look for stronger cabinets. Don’t go cheap! Heavy doors and durable hardware will stand the test of time (and your patience – there is nothing more annoying than struggling with poorly constructed doors)!

Materials: Solid wood? Wood and glass? Particle board or plywood – it’s all about the money! If you have high design tastes know that what you select will probably take a big bite out of your budget. A hint: less used cabinets can be less expensive. The powder room, guest bedroom or laundry room don’t require top of the line cabinets.

Cost: Custom vs. Pre-assembled – there are pros and cons to both. Consider your lifestyle, budget and design ideas and do your research. If you want custom, ask your cabinet maker for referrals and check them out! If you go pre-fab – goggle the manufacturer and do your homework.
