In early times a nice swipe of a damp mop was enough to clear the dust from a dirty wood floor. Even today, with a host of wood maintenance products on the marker, it is still a safe and effective way to clean both solid and engineered wood. But…be VERY careful about excess water on wood. Even daily trips through the living room by kids straight from the pool can cause damage that you will eventually have to deal with.
Do you notice the finish on your wood floor looking dull and faded?
Are the plans lifting slightly?
Are they uneven, “wavy” or squeaking?
It’s time to call in a professional. If the floors have not buckled, your flooring contractor will lightly sand the wood across the grain. This will remove any water from the top layer. Fans will usually dry up any remaining moisture, and loose boards will be re-attached so that the affected area can be restained.
If you were unlucky enough to experience a flood, the process will be much more detailed. Cupping and bucklung will require both the sub floor to be removed and replaced. PLEASE don’t be tempted to “band-aid” the problem with a cosmetic repair and stain. Inevitably this approach backfires because the moisture has not been sufficiently removed.
Play it smart. ACT FAST, HIRE A PROFESSIONAL and BE PATIENT. The true beauty and value of your wood floors are worth the time and effort.
