With the holidays coming up, those of us lucky enough to still have a few luxuries to splurge on should look to the wine room for that spouse who has everything! Whether your wife enjoys a mellow glass of cab, or your husband likes a cigar and a rich merlot, a wine room detailed in elegant stone may be the perfect gift for that loved one who has everything. Not only can you enjoy it for years to come (and it’s a secret escape from the kids!) but… it will certainly enhance the value of any home. Here are a few tips to make that wine room fantasy a reality:

– First, determine how serious you are about the true essence of the space. Are you a true connoisseur determined to create the perfect environment to store your priceless collection? Or, is you goal just to create a romantic, old world retreat? Either way, the outside appearance will be the same. Stone, stone, stone.

– Image walls covered in natural stone – not only beautiful but the perfect material for allowing the room to adapt to humidity control devices – think subterranean caves!

– Temperatures of 50-60 Fahrenheit and humidity of 60-70 percent are necessary to enable wines to mature slowly.

– To duplicate the look of a medievel chateau wine room, choose matierals such as rock, iron and wood. The floor should look aged as well – rustic and set in a random pattern.

– For a classic French look, large blocks of Limestone on the walls, arched niches, tumbled stone murals and brick will create an impressive look.

– And, don’t forget the ceiling! Wood beams, tumbled marble or artist stencils will complete the intimate setting.
